Vanya Gant qualified in medicine in 1980. After training to Senior registrar level he did a PhD in Cellular Immunology, and re-trained in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He has worked as a Microbiologist, Infection Diseases and Infection Control doctor for the last 17 years. He has developed an emerging interest in matters of avoidable patient harm, hospital acquired infection, and decontamination/cleaning by better design for healthcare over the past ten years. He considers that such challenges of transmission of organisms can and will only be addressed and overcome once and for all by a multidisciplinary culture-changing approach incorporating experts in hospital design, clinical psychology, and diagnostics. He currently is on the UCLH Hospitals Medical Board as Divisional Clinical Director for Infection as well as delivering a front line Infection Service to the Trusts' large Haematological Malignancy In- and out-patient Service.
